Lasting the cork footbed for children

We build seven pairs in our catalogue on a child's last. The core remains the moulded cork footbed, the deep heel cup, and the leather uppers. But scaling down a pattern means adjusting the contour of the bed, thinning the outsole, and making the buckle easy to pull.

The shapes we keep on the shelf

A child's pair shares the same foundation as the adult line. We cut the uppers from suede and nubuck in black, tan, taupe, and brown. The footbed is moulded cork with an eva outsole underneath. The vamp sits across the instep, anchored by a buckle that holds the foot in place. We keep the deep heel cup and the raised rim along the edges. The toe box stays broad. What works on our standard last works here because the foot still needs a stable floor to sit on throughout the day.

What changes in the cork contour

A lighter foot does not press down on cork with the same force. If we used the adult contour, the footbed would feel like a block of wood under the arch. We draw the arch curve shallower on these smaller lasts. The cork mixture contains the same ground bark, but the shape allows a lighter step to meet the footbed evenly. We also trim down the thickness of the eva outsole. A thinner tread reduces the total mass of the sandal so the foot is not dragging excess material around.

Buckles built for quick handling

Children take their sandals off and pull them back on many times between morning and evening. The hardware must work without a struggle. We select a buckle that glides along the strap so small fingers can fasten it with one hand. The punch holes sit closer together on the strap. This gives a closer adjustment across the instep without pulling the leather tight against the skin. The upper stays secure, but the buckle releases quickly when it is time to kick the shoe off at the door.

How to check the fit at home

You do not need a tape to check how the pair sits. Look at the heel cup first. The heel must settle into the base of the cup, not ride up on the rear rim. Next, inspect the buckle strap. It should fasten through a middle hole, leaving spare punch holes on either side for adjustment. Finally, look at the front edge of the cork bed. The toes need clear space between their tips and the front rim. If the toes spill over the edge, the last is wrong.

Handing the pair down to others

Adult cork takes the imprint of a foot over months of wear. Children outgrow their shoes long before they wear down the footbed. By the time a child moves up to the next pair, the cork bed will still look relatively flat. It will not carry a deep imprint of the previous foot. That is entirely normal for this weight class. The suede upper, the buckle, and the eva outsole hold together well enough that the pair is ready to pass on to the next child.

Looking over the small last

We build these pairs to be worn hard and passed along. A dry brush cleans the suede nap, and a damp cloth wipes the footbed clean. The cork stays firm under light steps, and the lighter outsole keeps the sandal moving. When the toes approach the front rim, the pair is ready for someone else.
