How this pair is put together

Black suede upper

Thick black suede forms the vamp and quarters, cut clean along the collar. The nap has a soft texture that holds a rich, matte black tone. Brush it lightly with a suede brush to clear dust.

Moulded cork footbed

Our footbed uses genuine cork shaped with a raised arch and a deep heel cup. Walking presses your imprint into the footbed, so the cork yields and matches the shape of your sole over time.

Adjustable metal buckle

A single prong buckle in a darkened finish secures the strap across the instep. Several punch holes allow you to tighten or loosen the grip over your foot, holding the backless mule in place.

Textured walking sole

Under the cork, we bond a lightweight synthetic outsole patterned with shallow grooves. The tread provides steady contact with floorboards, tile and pavement, while the closed toe keeps grit away from your feet.

What we cut and last

We cut these backless mules from deep black suede and shape them over our women last with a rounded closed toe. A moulded cork footbed sits beneath the foot, lined in matching suede that softens with wear. The antique-finish metal buckle adjusts across the vamp so the upper hugs your instep.

Caring for this upper

  • Suede: Brush dry with a bristle block, never wet the nap.
  • Give the cork footbed a week of short wear so it takes the imprint of your heel.

Reading before you choose

How the moulded cork footbed takes shape

Our workshop builds every shoe on one moulded cork footbed across the catalogue.

Caring for four uppers and cork

We build our footwear on a single moulded cork footbed across four distinct upper materials.

Closed toe or open toe across the catalogue

Every shoe we build begins with the same moulded cork footbed, but the first choice at the bench is the front of the upper.

Looking for a different foot?

Every pair on our shelf shares this footbed. Change the toe, the upper or the last and the rest stays the same.
